Course Description:

Drawing I is an introduction to visual art and fundamental drawing skills. Students will explore different avenues of visual communication, self-expression, and creative problem-solving through the creation of representative observational drawing. All work is based upon the study, aesthetics, purpose, and criticism of visual art forms.

Course Learning Goals:
  • Understand and use visual arts as a means of creative self-expression and interpersonal communication.
  • Understand the media and processes used in the production of drawing techniques
  • Understand the relationship between visual arts and history, culture, and society.
  • Demonstrate a capacity for critical sensitive response to various visual arts experiences.
  • Demonstrate planning and organizational skills with materials, supplies and class time.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills as expected in the creative workplace.
  • Use academic, mathematical and communication skills.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Use of problem-solving as a critical thinking process.
  • Understanding and implementing the uses and of different art mediums and tools.
  • Use of the language of art through written evaluations and oral presentations.
  • Complete, display, and present work in a professional manner.
  • Acquisition of class and personal management skills.
  • Peer tutoring by sharing ideas, skills and research with other students.
  • Awareness of professional and leisure opportunities in drawing and visual art.
  • Understanding of the social and historical implications of art.
  • Maintain a sketchbook of notes and outside of class assignments.
  • Keep a portfolio of studio work.

Schedule of Topics/Units Covered:
1st Quarter: Examine and utilize Elements of Art and develop basic drawing skills.
1st Quarter: Mid-term: Examine and utilize the Principles of Design and more advanced drawing skills.
2nd Quarter: Apply understanding of Elements, Principles, and skills through different drawing media.
2nd Quarter: Use advanced techniques creating work which requires all prior knowledge.


Differentiation/Accessibility Strategies and Support:
Instruction is differentiated to accommodate all learners. Projects are flexible and allow room for personal choice and exploration. Extra studio time can be scheduled for lunch/SRP and after school.

Essential Skills to be Taught or Assessed:
Since this class is Project-Based, the following skills will be taught implicitly (though not always explicitly) and sometimes evaluated over the course of the semester: reading and comprehending, writing clearly and accurately, listening actively and speaking clearly, applying mathematics, thinking critically, personal management and teamwork, using technology, civic and community engagement, and global literacy.

Assessment/Evaluation/Grading Policy:
Class projects are evaluated by the use of rubrics. Rubrics are scored on the extent to which the following criteria are executed in the finished product:
  • Content/Subject (10 Points Possible)
  • Design/Composition (10 Points Possible)
  • Technique/Craftsmanship (10 Points Possible)
  • Creativity/Experimentation (10 Points Possible)
  • Time-Usage/Participation (10 Points Possible)

Scores are calculated into percentages which carry the following grades:
A = 93-100% B = 85 – 92% C = 76 – 84% D = 65 – 75% F = 0 – 64%

A typical quarter will consist of about four projects, with shorter projects at the beginning of the year and longer projects at the end of the year. All projects are averaged together to produce the final grade. Presentations are also graded and averaged together to be equal in weight to one project. Success in this class is dependent on participation and motivation. Through a daily commitment to hard work, it is possible for the success of an average student to surpass that of a student who is “naturally talented.”

Behavioral Expectations:
- Come to class prepared to learn.
- Respect yourself, others, and school property.
- Stay focused on class work. Listening devices are permitted only at instructors discretion.
- Keep food and drink off of drawing tables.
- Keep cell phones silent and out of sight.
- Leave the drawing studio in better condition than you found it.

Safety Issues & Requirements:
Classroom equipment and drawing media/tools require respect. Proper class usage and behavior is essential.

SRP/Homework:
Quality art work requires quality time. Some students require more time than others to complete work at their highest level of achievement. Some require extra time due to absences. All students can benefit from the use of SRP. The level of participation has direct impact upon the quality of work, and therefore, the final grade.

Required Supplies:
A 9"x12" sketchbook of at least forty blank pages
A standard No. 2 pencil
Drawing eraser
Hand-held pencil sharpener
